Hope Hill Loop Trail Status

As of February 23, 2025

Located on Mt. Tuam, Salt Spring Island, Hope Hill Loop is a small trail loop just off Musgrave Road. Before setting out, be aware that the full loop is currently not recommended unless you're prepared for a serious bushwhack after the viewpoint. I highly recommend hiking to the viewpoint and returning the same way rather than attempting the full loop.

Current Trail Conditions

  1. Trail Obstacles: Right at the start, you'll need to navigate under a large fallen tree, followed by a creek crossing that is currently flowing strongly due to recent rainfall and snowmelt.
  2. Creek Crossings: As the trail zigzags up the mountain, you will need to cross the same creek again. The second crossing is particularly tricky, as the water is deeper, and the only stepping options to avoid getting soaked are wet, slippery logs. Proceed with caution.
  3. Muddy Terrain: The trail remains quite muddy as you make your way up to the viewpoint detour, which branches off from the main trail.

Viewpoint & Beyond

A shot from the viewpoint:

Beyond the viewpoint, the loop continues but is strongly discouraged due to current conditions. The trail becomes heavily overgrown, nearly non-existent in some areas, and obstructed by large fallen trees that are difficult to navigate. Unless you're prepared for significant off-trail travel, turning back at the viewpoint is the safest and most enjoyable option.

Stay safe, and happy hiking!
